Ayurveda, a natural system of herbal medication, originated in India more than approx. 5,000 years ago and is the oldest continuously practiced wellness system in the world. The term Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda translates to knowledge of life. Based on the idea that disease is due to an imbalance or stress in a person's consciousness, Ayurveda encourages certain lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment. Drawn from an understanding of nature’s rhythms and laws, Ayurveda teaches that humans, as natural beings, are governed by the same rules and laws as all other natural beings. If we choose to ignore these laws, then imbalances will begin to appear, which can lead to disharmony and disease in the mind and body. An Ayurvedic approach treats each individual, taking into account their unique psychological, emotional, and physical conditions. Imbalances in the body are evaluated through the system of the five elements: ether, air, fire, water, and earth. The goal of Ayurveda is to teach people how to attain optimal health through a deeper understanding of themselves and their own particular nature in relationship to the world around them. It is a system based on natural healing through strengthening the body, mind, and spirit and allowing the body’s own natural healing mechanism to work to their fullest potential.

Referred to as 'akasha' in Sanskrit, ether is the element that comes first in yogic and Ayurvedic thinking. The space element is directly connected to the throat chakra or ‘Vishuddha’, ‘place of purification’ and is the most expansive and subtle of all elements. It has the qualities of being cold, light, dry, and mobile. It is defined as space and is the space the other elements fill. In the body, it relates to the hollow or empty spaces in the body, like nose, stomach, and the ears that perceive sound. It connects everything. Without form or boundaries, Ether is the space of unlimited possibilities.
The element air, called “vayu” in Sanskrit, is the second of the five great elements (pancha mahabhutus). It comes second because it evolves from ether. As the potential inherent within space becomes active, the result is air. The element of air represents the capacity for motion or kinetic energy. Air represents all forces and the movement that transpires as a result of those forces. In our physical body, Air is the movement of oxygen and nutrients to the cell and waste out of the cell, the air we breathe, nerve impulses, circulation, and movement of our joints. Air supports our energy, prana or vital life force and in the mind it supports the movement and coordination of our thoughts.
Ayurveda has described an important factor of digestion and metabolism in our body as Agni (Fire). Ingested food is to be digested, absorbed and assimilated, which is unavoidable for the maintenance of life, and is performed by Agni. In Ayurveda, the term “Agni” is used in the sense of digestion of food and metabolic products. Agni(Fire) converts food in the form of energy, which is responsible for all the vital functions of our body. Therefore, Ayurveda considers that Dehagni is the cause of life, complexion, strength, health, nourishment, lusture, oja, teja (energy) and prana (life energy).Fire, agni, represents light, heat, and transformation. Fire is carried throughout the body in the blood and plasma as heat and in our mind support the strength of our intellect, discrimination, and perception.
The element of water, apas (Jal) represents fluidic matter and the cohesive principle of physics. Water is the protector of the body. It provides the body with its most basic nourishment. Water protects against the dissolution of the ether element, the roughness and motion of the air element and the heat of the fire element.Water, apas, is cohesion and holds everything together. It has the qualities of being cold and heavy. It supports fluidity so that we can move slowly and gracefully. Water is Sweat, urine, our lymphatic system, and how subtle molecules are carried from one part of the body to the other. Water is responsible for emotions such as unconditional love, compassion, empathy, deep feelings, and attachment.
The element earth, called “prithvi” in Sanskrit, is the fifth of the five great elements (pancha mahabhutus). It comes fifth because it evolves out of each of the other four elements (ether, air, fire and water), containing the essence of these elements within it. Ether provides earth the space to exist within.Earth, pruthivi, is stability and the building block of nature. Earth makes up the structures within us; bones, cartilage, hair, skin, nails, teeth, muscles, and organs. In the mind, the earth gives stability, contentment, and structure to thoughts and ideas. Earth expresses its nature of continuity as well.
